Regents Living Environment exam

The Living Environment Regents Examination is a standardized Biology test given to students enrolled in New York State schools in June, August, and January. The Living Environment Regents exam replaces the previous Biology Regents exam and is based on the New York State Core Curriculum.

An Overview of the Living Environment Regents exam

WHY TAKE THE LIVING ENVIRONMENT REGENTS EXAM?

All students in New York State must pass one of the four Regents science exams in order to graduate from high school. The New York State Living Environment Regents Examination is the preferred option for most students.

To receive an Regents Diploma with Advanced Designation, among other requirements, students must pass with a score of 65 or higher in two science exams including Living Environment.

WHAT IS THE FORMAT OF THE LIVING ENVIRONMENT REGENTS EXAM?

The format consists of several components.

  • Part A —Multiple-Choice
    Consists of 35 multiple-choice questions that test your knowledge of specific factual information. You must answer all questions in Part A. Maximum of 35 credits awarded.
  • PART B1 —Multiple-Choice
    Variable number of questions that may be based on the student's direct knowledge of biology, interpretation of experimental data, analysis of readings in science, and ability to deal with representations of biological phenomena. You will be required to answer all questions in both sections of Part B.
    Maximum of 30 credits awarded.
  • PART B2 —Free-Response and Multiple-Choice
    Variable number of questions that may be based on the student's direct knowledge of biology, interpretation of experimental data, analysis of readings in science, and ability to deal with representations of biological phenomena. You will be required to answer all questions in both sections of Part B.
    Maximum of 30 credits awarded.
  • Part C —Free-Response
    Variable number of questions that may be based on the student's direct knowledge of biology, interpretation of experimental data, analysis of readings in science, and ability to deal with representations of biological phenomena. You will be required to answer all questions in Part C.
    Maximum of 20 credits awarded.
  • Part D —Free-Response and Multiple-Choice
    Variable number of questions that will assess the student's knowledge of and skills on any of the four required laboratory experiences supplied to schools by the NYS Education Dept. You will be required to answer all questions in Part D.
